Braille Dino: help and settings

How to play

The game runs on the game line above, which your braille display shows. You are the dino in cell 1. Obstacles come from the right, one cell at each step, and vanish as they reach you. The game is slower than the original so your display can keep up, and you can slow it down further in the settings. Everything here is also on the game line: press any key other than Space on the start screen for the menu, with How to play, Symbols, Practice and Settings.

While you play, the game line is the only thing your screen reader can reach, and Tab stays on it, so you cannot drift off it. To read this page, choose Help and settings on the page from the game's menu. Tab then moves through the page's buttons, headings and settings; Back to the game, or Escape, returns you. With a mouse, click a heading or a setting at any time.

Keys

WhatBraille displayKeyboard
Play, jump, go on, nextSpace (either space bar)Space; Up arrow also jumps
Duck (in the air: drop at once)Any other braille key (the menu's Key check shows how each one arrives)Down arrow, held
PausePP; on a Mac, Escape too
Menu, choose, change a settingAny key other than SpaceDown arrow or Escape opens the menu; Enter chooses; Left and Right arrows change a setting
Move through a menu or pagesSpaceUp and Down arrows
BackAny key other than Space, on a pageEscape

With NVDA or JAWS on Windows, jump with Space rather than the Up arrow, and duck with a letter: arrow keys make the screen reader read the line aloud. Escape belongs to the screen reader there (it leaves focus mode or forms mode), so pause with P.

Ducking needs your screen reader's braille input set to computer braille, which sends each key at once. With a literary table, keys arrive only when you press the space bar, so during play only Space works. That is enough: every course can be passed with Space alone. Jump a high bird when it is in cell 3 or 4, so the top of your jump passes over it.

Reading the line

Each cell is one place on the road. Its dot rows are heights: the top row, dots 1 and 4, is high in the sky, and the bottom row is the ground. Your dino in cell 1 covers the rows where you can be hit. Something hits you when it shares a row with your dino; left and right in the cell do not matter. The Symbols table below gives every shape for your Braille table setting (Braille dots on Windows).

Print cells, the default on a Mac, and 6-dot on Windows draw the game's four heights in three dot rows, so the two highest share dots 1 and 4. With Eight dot, with dots 7 and 8, the four heights are the four dot rows, and dots 7 and 8 are the ground.

Braille tables

The game works with each of VoiceOver's quick-choice braille tables: Contracted, Uncontracted and Eight dot. VoiceOver's Contracted and Uncontracted tables leave out braille cell characters, so the game line is drawn with letters and punctuation that all three tables show as single cells: you are o (dots 1 3 5) running, a middle dot (dots 2 5 6) ducking, i (dots 2 4) low in a jump and a (dot 1) high in it; a small cactus is - (dots 3 6), a large cactus ! (dots 2 3 5) and a high bird a (dot 1); low birds do not come, as no print symbol for them stays low in all three tables. A hit shows : (dots 2 5) in cell 1, and the count-in is three dots, two, one. With Eight dot three of them differ: the middle dot is dots 3 6 8, ! is dots 2 3 4 6 and : is dots 1 5 6; they still hit at the same heights (low in a jump you clear only a small cactus, high in a jump you clear the cacti). With Eight dot you can also choose Settings, Braille table, Eight dot, with dots 7 and 8, for braille cells with the ground on dots 7 and 8, where low birds come too. With a Contracted or Uncontracted braille input table, braille keys arrive as words when you press Space, so during play only Space works, which is enough; dot 7 or dot 8 alone may still duck (try them in Key check). With an Eight dot input table every key ducks.
